Week 32 – What is “Success”?

Good morning Readers and welcome!

Well the question for me this week is “What is Success”?  How do we know if we are successful or not?  How is success measured?  This was prompted by a post in one of the groups I belong to where a member offered an opportunity for successful VA’s to be interviewed.  My initial thought was: “yes, the exposure will be fantastic, but do I qualify?  Am I Successful?”  I don’t know, let’s find out.

Dictionary.com defines the word “success” as follows:  (I promise that this is not an English lesson)!!

noun

1.    the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals.

2.    the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

3.    a performance or achievement that is marked by success, as by the attainment of honors: The play was an instant success.

4.    a person or thing that has had success, as measured by attainment of goals, wealth, etc.: She was a great success on the talk show.

Success is difficult to measure.  As you can see from the definition, success is something that other people think you are or it is something you have achieved that brings you fame or it can relate to prosperity.  There is a phenomenal amount of information on this topic on the internet that I can’t possibly compete with in such a short space of time.  (I spend a maximum of 15 minutes a week writing this Blog as I do it for fun)!!  I came across an interesting article on Squidoo that you may find useful – here is the link – http://www.squidoo.com/personal_success#module149059638

This is what a couple of famous statesmen have had to say about Success:

“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”
Winston Churchill

“I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.”
Abraham Lincoln

I like this one:

“A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”
Bob Dylan

In my heart the answer must be that it is extremely personal and it doesn’t matter what other people think – it’s what we think – Am I Successful?  Well, ……  mmmmmm …….  still thinking ………. “yes”!

See you on line,
