Good morning and welcome!
The big question this week is “Who’s the Boss”?
No-one said that having one’s own business would be easy! Even the get-rich-quick schemes aren’t easy otherwise we would all be rich! All the motivational material and research in the world can’t prepare one enough for owning one’s own business.
Well who is really the boss? Is it moi or the client?
VA’s clients are the people that pay us and keep our business ticking over. It is easy to confuse “client” and “boss” or “employer”. Our clients work with us. Our clients do not own us. In fact our clients do not employ us either. We have the freedom of choice as to who we want to work for, when we want to work and what work we want to do. In fact this is crucial to a successful VA business. We, the VA’s, dictate the terms of working with our clients. We come to an agreement regarding hourly rates or retainers, how many hours we will be working and what work we will be doing.
It is easy when starting out to treat our clients as our employers! This is after all what we are used to. “Please may I have a longer lunch break today as I have a doctor’s appointment”; “Please may I leave at 3 o’clock today; I’ve worked the time in”; I am sorry I am late this morning but the trains were delayed due to cable theft”. Always feeling guilty. “Am I working hard enough?”; “Am I next to be retrenched?”
In working for oneself (as a VA) we have the freedom of choice! (More about that next week …)
To answer the question: “Who’s the Boss”? I am the Boss!
See you on line,
